About the artworkAre these shapes cut out of MDF board abstract sculptures, symbols or linguistic signs? Maria Jacobson explores the boundary between different concept categories. She is fascinated by our urge to read and order our surroundings – our constant search for patterns, meanings and connections. This installation is called Possible Meme. According to the evolutionary biologist Richard Dawkins, a meme is “A unit of cultural inheritance, hypothesised as analogous to the particulate gene, and as naturally selected...” Memes, according to Dawkins, include tunes, clothes fashions, catchphrases, ways of making pots and the technologies for building arches. In Jacobson’s installation, the shapes slip evasively within and between categories and eras. They reflect acquired knowledge and inherited memories – passed down from one generation to the next.
