About the artworkBeavvit II seems to portray a chorus of voices, a collective force gathered in moving formation. The North Sami title means “[many] close friends”, but it also resembles the word for sun, beaivi. The sphere of colours and light consists of fringes from Sami costumes. Outi Pieski’s installations, paintings and actions build on traditional crafts, duodji, and focus on the colonialist devaluation of Sami visual culture. These works also highlight the conditions of survival for indigenous peoples – the fight for autonomy, fictive national borders and repression of knowledge. But also the central yet obscured position of women as bearers of cultural heritage. Pieski often engages across disciplines with researchers, musicians, choreographers and filmmakers.
