About the artworkPelícula Hablada is a cinematic portrait of a grandfather, a family farm, a country and an era. The narrator – the grandchild – guides us through pictures and archive material from the 1930s to today. The main protagonist – the grandfather – is an Italian businessman who emigrates to Argentina to exploit the country’s natural resources. The backdrop is a Latin America in search of a new identity, in the transition from agrarian society to urbanised industrial nation. In the course of the film, the grandfather’s business in tanned leather turns into a metaphor for the dream of modern society and the desire for Europeanness, a symbol of civilisation and refinement. The processing from raw material into commodity – from reptile skin into elegant shoe – becomes synonymous with the power that many imagined would transform an entire nation.
