About the artworkIda Persson’s paintings manifest an ambivalence to power. With their clinically smooth surfaces and mechanical precision, the structures, equipment and monumental facades can inspire a sense of trust and security, but also the opposite: vulnerability and violence. Moreover, the viewer approaches these paintings from below at an angle, so the motifs seem to tower above us like high-rise buildings. Sometimes, the architectonic or mechanical elements have human or super-human features. As if the buildings have become part of a body, or the body has been incorporated in a machine. In the grooves between the perfectly-joined parts, there are sometimes visible traces of red paint or blood. Organic, intractable and grubby life – which is tamed or erased with architecture in different ways – is constantly threatening to break free or seep back in.
