About the artworkHow does post-industrial society manifest itself in the landscape in Norrbotten? Erik Holmstedt’s bleak images show details from the Boden-Luleå region. Cables sprouting like plants from the ground, Falu-red metal-clad houses, menacing wire fences around security facilities. And then, the web of high-voltage power lines that today provide energy from the hydraulic power plants to the many energy-consuming computer companies in the area. Thus, the digitalisation of our lives affects not only our perception of reality but also impacts physically on our surroundings. Holmstedt’s documentation of the emergence over the past decade of a new kind of infrastructure is a factual observation of what has been lost, and a reminder that not even nature escapes our digital efforts.
