About the artworkJoakim Kocjancic is rooted in a tradition of documentary photography. The B/W images that form the series and photo book Europea were shot spontaneously in streets and plazas all over Europe. Kocjancic has a Swedish mother and an Italian father of Slovenian origin, and he himself has lived in many European cities. Through the camera lens, he mirrors himself in others, discovering what it is he loves and preserving it in his photographs. The people Kocjancic portrays are part of his own identity, and he is part of theirs. In his photographs, the cities, which are sometimes the backdrop and sometimes the main subject, merge into one big metropolis. Boundaries dissolve, and the focus is moved from different nationalities to a universal human condition.
