About the artworkLisa Tan’s videos explore the boundary between personal and cultural history, in winding mental voyages through artistic works and geological eras. Waves springs from the British writer Virginia Woolf’s experimental novel, in a contemplation on how we are shaped by forces moving around us – society and technology, land and sea. Here, prose is juxtaposed with coastal views, Gustave Courbet’s marine landscapes and Google’s computer halls that are cooled by the Baltic Sea. Sunsets is a reflection on language and creativity based on a TV interview with the Brazilian author Clarice Lispector. The camera moves in horizontals and verticals, capturing ocean waves and sound waves in Tan’s video in the zone between night and day, analogue and digital, voice and image. In her works, Lisa Tan returns to issues of belonging, loss and representation.
