About the artworkA dystopian urban landscape reveals a possible near future. The streets are on fire, but no life is visible. Dead bodies lie scattered among abandoned chattels and rubble. The city is portrayed at a distance with a cold, recording eye devoid of feelings. Kristina Abelli Elander felt that society was on the wrong track. Here, she is trying to warn us. Maybe it’s already too late. The twenty or so paintings in The Street Series were made between 1978 and 1982. Abelli Elander called them posters and made holes at the top so they could be hung on the wall by a string. They all share the same comic book aesthetics. A way of communicating with a broader audience than the one found in the art galleries of cities.
