About the artworkThe style and content of Joanna Hellgren’s drawings reflect the subtlety of human existence. Her images are black and white and graphic. Here, they are detached from their original context of her graphic novels My Night Brother from 2006-2008 and Frances, published in three volumes between 2008 and 2012. Jacob, the night brother, grows up in the shadow of his dead brother, who had the same name. His mother projects the dead brother on the living brother. Frances is orphaned and taken in by her aunt Ada, who also cares for her own father, Frances’s grandfather. The narratives concern our inner notions of the world, what and how we think of our surroundings, and how we can handle and influence them with our presence.
