About the artworkPiet Mondrian, who had studied at the Academy of Arts in Amsterdam, was originally a landscape painter, producing clearly composed paintings of Dutch canals, farms and vegetation in sophisticated colours. In 1912 he set off for Paris, and under the influence of  budding Cubism he began to stylise his motifs, peeling away all the details. In well-harmonised compositions consisting of vertical and horizontal lines he created a kind of atmospheric synthesis of the landscape - mood studies of foliage, water and so on are brought together to make pictures, admittedly related to the idioms and attitudes of Cubism, yet quite personal. 'The Sea' is typical of this period.
