About the artworkThe performance work Statolith is a balancing act for three people who sit for two hours on boards suspended from the ceiling with concrete sacks taped to them as counterweights. The three separate units are in perpetual motion, both visually and physically. The slightest movement requires a countermovement to maintain equilibrium. The silence and concentration of the dancers in the work sharpens our awareness of both their and our own presence and weight in the room. The human body’s striving for control and stability negotiates the system of weight and counterweight almost unconsciously. These physical functions that operate ceaselessly but beyond our volition fascinate Adèle Essle Zeiss, who is a trained classical ballet dancer.
