About the artworkThere is something enigmatic and slightly macabre about Tova Mozard’s B/W photos from the dark and somewhat shabby back streets of Hollywood. Her images document rehearsals for the classic and rather dated magic trick of sawing a woman in two. An illusory dismemberment with an enthralled and willingly manipulated audience, focusing our gaze on the female body. The video work Psychic explores the dubious prophesies delivered by mediums to forlorn customers, in this case the artist herself. Mozard participates personally as both protagonist and experimental subject. The different mediums make statements that are both cocksure and waveringly generic. Even if their words are all we hear, a dialogue arises in the silences.
