About the artworkIn the middle of the picture, a pale drawing of a royal couple is visible. It appears like a shaky mirage against the heavy, black opaque charcoal background. Helene Billgren copied the royal couple from a catalogue of reproductions of works by the artist Ernst Josephson (1851–1906). Billgren often finds inspiration in images created by others and inserts them in her own narratives. Hence, like so many of her works, Couple in Glint of Light is a hybrid of disparate contents, expressions, styles, materials and techniques. Billgren also combines different sets values, so that concepts such as fine and ugly coexist. She likes it when it’s ugly, it’s fine like that, she says. The smudged, blurred splodges are in the picture to leave room for the viewer’s imagination.
