About the artworkJohan Willner’s practice embraces a variety of photographic methods, where the concept and theme determine what technique he uses. The staged series Boy Stories began with an inner vision Willner had carried with him since childhood. The image of a boy in the back seat of a car. He is bleeding from a head wound but isn’t crying, and doesn’t lose face in front of his school mates who are gathered around him. In Boy Stories, Willner revisits his childhood haunts to recapture moments from the past. With the deceptiveness of memories in mind, the past is reconstructed as a reflection of today’s reality. The scenes in the stills resemble a cinematic approach without a chronological, explanatory narrative. The series unfolds into a study of masculinity and the search for identity.
