About the artworkA nude female torso appears against the pink window of a tattoo parlour. Her skin is covered with words and pictures: “Mother”, “Home Sweet Home”, the American bald eagle and a red stop sign. Along her throat is a dash line and the words “cut here”. Martha Edelheit established herself on the avant-garde art scene in New York in the late 1950s. Inspired by the ethnologist Claude Lévi-Strauss’s ideas on tattoos as the first form of visual art, Edelheit began working on paintings such as Tattooed Lady Performing. Here, the skin is not only a canvas but also a projection surface for a plethora of dreams, expectations and demands. In often sexually-charged works, Edelheit intentionally challenges the traditional image of the female body.
