About the artworkGut feeling is what drives Monika Macdonald’s photography. She claims to be more inspired by painting and is exceedingly uninterested in her camera and technique. Uncertainty and fumbling were prominent features when creating these staged images. Staging the scenes, where she seeks for an exactness in style, is allowed to take time. In Absence is a photographic series that was presented as a book and an exhibition. A ballerina is sitting at a bar in her tulle skirt having a very ordinary fast meal. This is one picture in a suite of images that conveys a mood of loneliness but also a sense of going one’s own way and daring to be vulnerable. Far from the ingratiating, clickbait we are accustomed to on Facebook or in glossy magazines, she portrays life in its full complexity, with both bright and dark sides.
