About the artworkThe photographic suite The Lost Series was engendered by an artistic crisis. Eric Magassa felt that the discrepancy between his reality and the mass media image of Gothenburg’s housing estates needed to be bridged somehow. He approached the task with the playful social criticism of the dada movement, and his interest in animism, and spiritualism, which had been awakened through his father’s origins in Senegal and Mali. With simple masks made of cardboard and fabric, often from Ikea, he placed himself in the empty urban spaces in front of a camera on a stand with a self timer. This project moved Magassa’s practice out into the street, and it soon came to include shabby urban settings all over the world, including Detroit, USA, and Faugères in France.
