About the artwork
Truls Melin’s work may seem playful and harmless but it often operates in
the darkest corners of the soul. Many of his sculptures bear traces of childhood
memories and he mines his motifs in thesubconscious. They frequently probe
the boundaries between life and death, joy and pain, memory and loss. His work
tends to avoid the self-explanatory, a conscious act in a culture overflowing
with readable images and messages. The seemingly conciliatory monochrome
surfaces in his sculptures also have a political dimension: they hide the works’
construction in the same way as so much is hidden from us in society. Our
consciousness is easily duped when our senses are pleased.
