About the artworkIn her works, Britta Marakatt-Labba processes a largely unwritten Sami history, the cultural repression of an indigenous people. But she also deals with events, such as the Swedish appeasement policy of the Second World War, or the 2011 massacre on Utøya in Norway. Marakatt-Labba approaches her subjects with traditional Sami imagery and narratives. Her main medium is embroidery, occasionally applied to found, “low” utility materials. Here, she has stitched a map of the roads in Kiruna from memory. A changing city, being moved from ground that risks caving in due to mining. The background is sailcloth from Bodö in Norwegian Sápmi, corroded with age and use – a canvas marked by experiences from another nomadic movement.
