About the artworkA professional sociologist, Frida Orupabo collects material for her collages from archives of historic and contemporary images. She began sharing her images on virtual places such as Instagram and other social media, in an attempt to challenge homogenous seeing. Her works are associated with her personal history and a collective narrative. In the collages, she manipulates and deconstructs images of black women’s bodies, prompting reflections on how black women in particular have been represented in the past, and on how concepts such as beauty and identity can be expanded. Orupabo has said that art, for her, is a way of sorting chaos, finding pleasure, transforming anger, and sharing eyes.
