About the artwork
With a background as a pattern maker for Jacquard looms and a graphic designer, Thomas Bayrle began experimenting with different graphic techniques in his art. He felt that mass-production in modern consumer society was a magic cauldron that was boiling over and filling the world with a deluge of contents. Bayrle wanted to create environments that conveyed that experience and covered the walls and floor with his images, like carpets and wallpaper. His repetitive patterns invade viewers, surrounding them with thousands of coffee cups, shoes or logotypes. Bayrle was fascinated by the potential of new technology and embraced the logic of the manufacturing industry in his artistic practice with a mixture of pleasure and scepticism.
