- About the work
A myriad of details, divided into fields that now and then overlap, offers the choice of either moving from square to square, or taking a different route. Fahlström dreamed of making art that was both fun and elucidating. In 1962, he wrote, "…anyone who is interested could have an image machine in their home, and 'manipulate the world'… He moved to New York in 1961, and was influenced by the mythology of comic strips. He was fascinated by how games and game rules govern economics, politics and social interaction. Six months after this painting had been completed, Fahlström painted "Sitting…six months later", which is placed to your right. The onlooker was invited to create and change the work through mobile magnets on the metal covered surface.
