- About the work
Tora Vega Holmström was drawn to the vibrant city and found her models among guest workers in the Stockholm harbour. The people in this painting belonged to a family of Italian workers. Holmström travelled constantly all over Europe and North Africa. Marseille became her home away from home. This painting was exhibited in London and at the Baltic Fair in Malmö in 1914, where it was criticised for its modern style, especially the bold colour combinations. The facets in the picture resemble mosaics and the cubist art that had emerged on the European Continent. The woman radiates strength, but the nudity of her and the child suggests vulnerability.
