About the artworkIn the 1921 painting The Source, we see a woman reclining in an Arcadian landscape. Arcadia is the name of a region in Greece, but also the mythological home of the god Pan and the nymphs. The woman depicted in this painting is Picasso’s first wife, Olga Khokhlova. At the time it was made, she has just given birth to the artist’s first son, Paul. Her white tunic recalls ancient Greece, as does the urn that pours forth its life-giving water into the landscape. The painting is suffused with a mythological mysteriousness, and Khokhlova appears to be more goddess than mortal woman.
