About the artwork
Paul Strand claimed that objectivity was the true essence of photography, and called his works “abstractions”. Photographing architecture, everyday utensils and still lifes, he strove for a unity between form and space. Inspired by cubist artists such as Georges Braque and Pablo Picasso, Strand embraced the idea of fragmenting the photographic composition, according to the notion that the image could – and should – be both abstract and realistic at once. To achieve this, he and other photographers at the time experimented with different camera types, photographic perspectives and methods. This approach is known as straight photography.
