About the artworkArvid Fougstedt portrayed his friend Nils Santesson in profile as a serene man in a floppy hat, with a pipe and newspaper. Santesson travelled to Paris under dramatic circumstances. In 1907, he had been imprisoned for "crimes against nature", that is, for sexual relations with men, and was consequently exposed in the media. In consequence, he was practically unable to get work as an artist and pewter moulder - his original profession. Santesson was accepted by the artist community in Paris and became friends with Dardel and Ivan Lönnberg, with whom he had an affair. Fougstedt reveals Santesson's political leanings by highlighting the newspaper L'Action française, monarchist, Catholic and anti-Semitic.
