About the artwork
Monogram is one of the works Robert Rauschenberg called combines, a kind of hybrid form of painting and sculpture. He found the angora goat in a store for second-hand office furniture. Rauschenberg often used stuffed animals in his combines, giving them a second life. He had originally planned to include the goat in a wall-hung work and mounted it on a shelf next to a painting. In a second version he tried placing it on a base on the floor in front of an upright panel. Finally the goat was simply placed on the painting, changing the axis of the work from vertical to horizontal. In the collage-like painting under the goat a number of newspaper cuttings have been inserted. We see photographs of an astronaut looking up at the sky, and of a funambulist walking on a slack rope across an abyss. Just under the nose of the goat is a picture of four footprints. They are from an experiment in the US Air Force, using footprints as a complement to fingerprints to identify bodies. The work was named after the way the horned billy-goat and the car tyre intertwine, like the letters of a monogram.
