About the artworkBritish artist Lynette Yiadom-Boakye combines drawings, found images and imagination in her figurative oils on canvas. The ambiguous characters appear in everyday intimate and timeless moments. These are not portraits in the sense that they depict actual people, yet the characters have an air of being distinct, unique individuals. Improvisation and capturing atmospheres or feelings are essential to Yiadom-Boakye’s creative process. A deep interest in paint, its materiality, and how the eye perceives colour, informs the entire practice. The poetic titles are like additional brush strokes, integrating with the paintings rather than explaining them.
