About the artworkZostera marina is the Latin name for eelgrass – the habitat for many saltwater fish and an efficient carbon sink. Eutrophication has radically decimated the eelgrass beds, and divers are now attempting to re-establish them, plant by plant, in a laborious project to save the species off the coast of Bohuslän. Anna Ling has her roots in this region, and has an emotional bond to its west-coast flora and fauna, her family’s former marine livelihood, and the attention to weather and winds. Her approach is methodical, working with a brush in slow processes. Ling based this series on her own photographs of eelgrass on a shallow seabed in Skärhamn. She painted on unprimed linen canvas with ink washes that were left to dry between layers. The images resemble landscapes in birds-eye perspective on a winter’s day, or semi-transparent organisms on a microscope slide.
