About the artworkThis painting was made to adorn a Sami cot in Parka, 25 kilometres south-west of Kvikkjokk in the far north of Sweden. The Sami artist and craftsman Lars Pirak had obtained permission to build there, despite not being a member of that sameby, the local Sami community. The autumn scene shows a woman carrying a gierkkáv (cradle) and a man catching a rearing reindeer. In the background looms the holy Goabddábakte rock face. Pirak stretched his canvas on a chipboard and fastened it to the cot ceiling, where it was badly damaged over time. The only way to rescue the painting was to take it down, but storms and other misfortunes made it hard to move. Only after a small ceremony could it be persuaded to leave the Sami cot.
