About the artworkThe Danish author H. C. Andersen’s stories from the mid-1800s provided the literary inspiration for many of Anna Casparsson’s works. This folding screen features scenes from the stories of Little Claus and Big Claus, The Little Mermaid, and from a folk tale about Little Rose. Andersen’s stories are often both imaginative and gruesome, but these pictures are light-hearted and carefree. Appliqué, paint and embroidery are combined on the surface and the composition is free from conventional perspective. Anna Casparsson had no formal training as an artist and didn’t begin embroidering until she was in her sixties. For many years, her home in Saltsjöbaden was a popular meeting place for artists and writers.
