About the artworkHere, William Kentridge uses his method of drawing, erasing and redrawing to explore the interplay between image and subtext. The textual elements function as a kind of exploration of the subconscious. The inspiration comes partly from the use of automatic writing in psychoanalysis to access repressed memories, and partly from the séance as a channel to the supernatural.
