About the artworkFor Alex Israel, who was born and raised in Los Angeles, the Hollywood world of movies and TV is ever-present. Wanting to create a work of art for teenagers, Israel made the feature film “SPF-18” in collaboration with Michael Berk, creator of the TV series Baywatch. In this coming-of-age story, the young protagonists search for their own voice by being creative. One of them designs wetsuits. In the twilight colours of the Los Angeles sky, they are a success on the beach in Malibu. The wetsuit reappears here as a fragmentary self-portrait, cast after the artist’s body and inspired by the classical Greek bronze sculpture Victorious Youth at the Getty Villa Museum in Pacific Palisades.
