About the artworkIn the Galata neighbourhood in central Istanbul, Meriç Algün has searched for traces of a lost fig tree plantation from around 100 CE. She has documented the trees that now poke their way through the paving stones in backyards and parking lots. When Algün, a woman, walked around the area with her camera, she caused reactions, especially among men. In the work, she relays the feeling of being watched, and reflects on the biology and cultural history of figs. Fig blossoms are unisexual, and male trees and female trees are separated for more efficient modern cultivation. In art, the fig leaf has been used to hide the genitals of painted and sculpted bodies. Its fruit is considered to be sensual and convey erotic undertones.
