Anders Sunna’s practice focuses on art as resistance and a tool of political activism. In his works, he revisits a dispute that has been going on since the 1940s between the Swedish state, his own family and their former Sami village. A tug of war concerning land and the right to herd reindeer in the way they have done since time immemorial. The faceless bureaucrats of the County Administrative Board are portrayed here as uniformed guardians of a historic colonial power looming above the records of decisions and reindeer fences. Anders Sunna’s paintings, performances and installations reference both a canonical Swedish art history and street art. His works reveal the racification of the Sami and structural injustices that persist to this day.
