About the artworkJoseph Marioni works with precision, applying one thin coat of colour after the other. The result is practically phosphorescent, and not unlike the radiance of a renaissance painting. According to the artist, the books on renaissance art in his childhood home belong to his earliest memories. Marioni has said that he paints with “liquid light” and that he sees colours as the material of archetypes. He wants to paint a portrait of every colour, to reveal its personality. The canvases are often stretched so that the bottom edge is narrower than the top. That is the case here too, although the difference is only half a centimetre. The painting appears to reach out to the viewer, with overwhelming effect.
