About the artworkA ground cloth with barely discernible traces of car tyres, and of dirt that has penetrated the fabric from the reverse side, bears witness to conflict. When test blasting for mineral extraction was carried out in Gállok/Kallak outside Jokkmokk in northern Sweden in 2013, many people protested against the exploitation of nature. During one of the police interventions, Katarina Pirak Sikku laid out ground cloths on the road. As police officers, protesters, prosecutors and representatives of the mining company walked and drove over the surface, it was filled with tracks. A contemporary “frottage” of sorts – an impression that speaks both of what lies beneath the earth and the events unfolding above: a testimony of the land.
