About the artworkWater lilies and other flora and fauna flourish behind the glass as though transported there from the water lily pond at Claude Monet’s home in the French town of Giverny. Just as Monet constructed his own pond, Pierre Huyghe has laid the foundations of a closed ecosystem of his own in this work. The illumination reproduces the quality of the light in Monet’s garden in the autumn of 1917. It was in the years just before the First World War that Monet painted his beloved water lilies as the light shifted throughout the day and altered with the seasons. The special glass switches between being opaque and transparent, instantaneously and without warning. This renders the biological reality and the play of light the Impressionists were so intent on capturing.
