About the artworkHalftone media pictures repainted by hand in a modified size have featured heavily in Sigmar Polke’s artistic output since the 1960s, when he highlighted everyday objects and images in what came to be called German pop art. The halftone action figure is typical of the kind of found images that Polke transforms from banality into something epic. In the 1980s, he began exploring the potential of painting and abstraction, in an infinite variety of techniques and media – including arsenic, meteor dust and uranium. In this late work on paper, the different approaches meet in a painting that challenges our seeing and plays on the contrasts between expressive painterly gestures and the seemingly synthetic and mechanical.
