The Spirit of Garfield (in spite of NH)
In her works, Tamara Henderson frequently revisits the inherent logic of dreams and memories. Occasionally, she uses hypnosis to attain a state of mind beyond her habitual perception. Based on extensive sketches and notes, she builds complex systems from her observations, which ultimately form objects, films or spatial installations. The starting point is her own everyday surroundings: her studio, her flat, her clothes and furniture.
The Spirit of Garfield (In Spite of NH) incorporates a sculpture inspired by of a grave-like bed by the Italian architect and designer Carlo Mollino (1905-1973). Often, physical objects, created or found, serve as the protagonist in her films. With simple, obvious means – such as ropes, strings, gloved hands – these artefacts are animated in a choreography that appears both strictly regulated and spontaneous. The film was made in one continuous take. With strong elements of performance art and theatre, the film re-enacts the artist’s subconscious, while the absence of any visible human protagonist generates an enigmatic void.
