About the artworkRachel Harrison combines found objects with abstract forms into assemblages and installations. The mannequin in The Duck Hunter is Janus-faced; it simultaneously gazes forward and backward. A mask of Dick Cheney is attached to the back of the doll's head, wearing a pair of the one-time vice president’s trademark eye frames. The mannequin has sun glasses and there is a hole in its head. The work title nods to the film “The Deer Hunter” and refers to a hunting trip in 2006 when Cheney, the architect of the Iraq war, accidentally shot a friend while hunting quail. Rachel Harrison uses her imagery as a subversive instrument; she implicates the giants of history and goes shopping with her critical thinking, giving rise to a rare combination of provocation and humour, comedy and tragedy, where her bright colors and mass-produced objects contrast with the traditions of monumental sculpture.
