About the artworkBjarne Melgaard’s work Beyond Death raises the
question of how contemporary art history has
related to the disease AIDS. Melgaard was commissioned
by the Office for Contemporary Art
Norway to participate in the 2011 Venice Biennale.
For the exhibition, Melgaard presented an educational
series discussing the history of and contemporary
aspects of the AIDS crisis and its reflection
within contemporary art. Through these
discussions, Melgaard explored how AIDS has
become a lens through which some of the key
transformations shaping today’s world can be
viewed, particularly in relation to identity formation,
the use of violence, and the potential for
collective action.
