About the artworkHelen Marten explores the relationship between contemporary urban lifestyles
and organic nature, or a more “primordial” condition. Her work is based on
our preconceived expectations on surroundings and experiences, as a screen
against everything beyond our own control. How do we perceive reality around
us, what status do we confer on various phenomena?
Evian Disease reproduces places and objects with the photorealistic precision
of digital 3D animation, but also keels over into hallucinogenic images. The film
pans a luxury apartment, a pool game, a bizarre fashion show without actual
models. Texts by the artist are read by six different voices, in a flow of arguments
rich with wordplay and quirky expressions, on subjects ranging from semantics
to everyday events.
Helen Marten works with sculpture, installation, animation and text.
She is sometimes placed in a “post-internet” generation, whose oeuvres reflect
a contemporary life where virtual environments actually are reality. She says
that tactility and craftsmanship are closest to her heart, and that the digital
element here enables her to create something that “reeks of dishonesty”
– an illusory world where we project our aspirations and dreams on seemingly
perfect surfaces.
