About the artworkAlex Israel grew up in Los Angeles in the 1990s. Hollywood and the media industry provide material for his works. He has directed a movie about surf culture and founded a company for sunglasses. This painting is part of a series that was initially the backdrop for advertising the sunglasses. Later, these paintings, "flats", were used as studio decor for video portraits of celebrities in Israel’s series of interviews, "As it Lays" (2012). These works have borrowed features from windows and doors in Californian Art Deco, and the colours, applied by spray painting, represent the Los Angeles sunset.
