About the artworkThe "Smedsudden Painters" were a group of romantics and Stockholm artists who found a pastoral haven on Smedsudden by Lake Mälaren in the middle of the expanding city of Stockholm. Axel Nilsson was one of the first painters who visited Sjövillan, a dilapidated Empire house on Smedsudden, and wrote in his diary: "And then, some time in March, spring came - like a shot! Once again, we could sit in the drawing-room, which was warmed by the sun through the many windows. White gulls once more gleamed in the bay and the will to paint was roused from hibernation. The balcony doors were flung open, and that's how the 'famous' Arrival of Spring was born. I painted it rather quickly. From the shipyard nearby there were voices and hammering, the smell of tar."
