About the artworkTuija Lindström embarked on her career as a photographer in the mid-1970s, after moving to Stockholm from Helsinki. Her breakthrough came with a series of intimate black-and-white portraits of friends and arts celebrities. The conceptual series The Girls at Bull’s Pond, explores the theme of women floating in dark water. They are presented alongside monumental
photographs of cloths irons, creating a tension between the soft bodies and the sharp contours of the irons. Tuija Lindström was a professor at the School of Photography, University of Gothenburg for ten years, from 1992 to 2002. During her time there, the classes changed from a previous focus on commercial and documentary photography, and became more artistic and theoretical, with courses on subjects such as art history and feminist theory. Tuija Lindström stands out with her strong influence on generations of photographers in Sweden and the Nordic countries.
