About the artworkEric Hallström's paintings are characterised by a narrative delight and an unfailing ability to convey moods. At his debut in 1918, together with Gideon Börje, he presented naivist paintings with scenes from the outskirts of Stockholm.
In 1921, Hallström travelled to Italy, where he was inspired by early renaissance masters and developed a more terse style of painting. The works from this period have less detail and are more like stage-sets and more matter-of-fact than his early paintings. In City Scene, Italy the facades rise rhythmically. Gondolas float calmly like props on a theatre stage and the people look like paper dolls - without the liveliness that is otherwise found in Hallström's work.
