About the artworkCy Twombly’s work Roman Notes is characterised by his script-like scribbles, reminiscent of both graffiti and calligraphy. The series was created at a time when he was blurring the boundaries between painting, drawing and poetry, drawing inspiration from ancient inscriptions in Rome. Twombly’s creative process can be described as a state of flow, where he allows his mind to relax and his hand to work freely. The lines in Roman Notes feel rhythmic and primal, moving through time and space. In its entirety, the work consists of six parts. It has often been described as a musical score, inviting the viewer to engage with an open, timeless design.
