About the artworkLee Lozano uses words and text to challenge gender roles, power structures, and the boundaries of art. Her early works from 1961, created using techniques such as pencil, crayon, and collage on paper, reflect an intense and experimental process in which she explores personal and social issues. Bodies and objects merge in a charged dialogue with intense colours, creating a powerful visual impact. These works also mark her progression towards a more conceptual art and her growing resistance to institutional power, which led her to leave the art world in 1972. Lozano’s work remains groundbreaking and is a sharp critique of a male-dominated and market-driven art world.
