About the artwork
From the late 1920s to the early 1940s, Dorothea Tanning belonged to the surrealists, examining the absurdities of everyday life in works of art that often had a sexual undercurrent. In Don Juan’s Breakfast, the title suggests the lover’s morning after. His breakfast consists of a beer mug made of sensual fabrics. A row of buttons holds it together, and something resembling flesh peeks out between them, while the froth brims over. Tanning rejected being called a woman surrealist. She often said that the forces that inspired her to work as an artist, and the ones that kept her going, all related to being a human being, not a woman.
